Alma is instructed to spend time with her as a companion in a secluded seaside house and believes she is fostering a closeness and connectedness to Elizabeth, whom she greatly admires. In reality Elizabeth is manipulating her to study for her acting, like a spider spinning thread tighter and tighter until Alma is completely exhausted and drained- there’s nothing left of her emotionally or even of her self-identity. Elizabeth has psychologically manipulated a secret story out of Alma that confuses and upsets her. And she’s never told a soul, until now.
View the Full VersionBelow is Lady Anne’s monologue from Shakespeare’s Richard III, Act I scene ii. It begins at the funeral of Anne’s beloved father-in-law, the king. She is now the last Lancaster, as the king was murdered by evil Richard, who also killed her husband, Edward. Guards carry the coffin as she follows and at last cannot bear her sorrow and asks them to stop for a moment. She addresses the guards, the dead king, then begins a slew of curses against Richard, and ends the speech addressing the guards again. She is of noble birth, a lady and also very religious; an outburst of hatred like this is extremely out of character for Anne and shows the depth of her pain and anger.
